Growing up in a resort setting gives a person a special portal view on life. Most individuals and families will be on vacation for a limited amount of time each summer. But what if you were to grow up in a vacation resort where each week, every summer your life was increasingly different than the summer before? Where every summer you had the chance to meet new individuals, oftentimes each week. What if you had the chance to work with college students from across the USA and other countries? How would those experiences shape your life as an adolescent and then a young adult?
This book takes you on a journey through the eyes of a child who had the privilege of growing up in a vacation world high in the Colorado Rockies in a resort setting. From pumping gas to serving watermelon for two thousand or more, to seeing the joy of families vacationing and working with summer college staff that created lifetime friendships, the author places into words what it was like to live in a rocky mountain paradise.
This is your chance to read about a kid who grew up in a one-of-a-kind Christian camp/resort setting and the individuals he met and how many people from all walks of life, along with a resort, can shape and influence a life.

As I read his book, I could envision the camp.I purchased several copies of this book directly from another source, but wanted to purchase a Kindle edition, so I can peek at it when traveling. It is a joy writing this review, to let people know about this wonderful book.
In the warmth Of The Shadow, is an easy-to-read book for all ages – I am giving copies of it to friends and family this December as Christmas gifts!
What a joy it has been to get to know Robert's parents, through the book. They intentionally selected him (he was adopted), and loved him (even when he was a bit of a challenge).
This book took me back 40 or 50 years – to my childhood and young adult years – living new experiences, and re-living others through the descriptions of the car ride, the singing and guitar-playing around the campfire in the mountains, hiking, enjoying the outdoors, the hymn-singing, the meals that seemed so simple (but were actually a huge production -- Bob shares the efforts that went into every meal for 1,000 people or more) -- and he shares so many more experiences in his book.
Several times I burst out laughing – sometimes I laughed to the point of happy tears – as I read accounts of the drinking fountain, Robert's adventure under the main building, attempts to slip out in the night to be with friends around the campfire, and other adventures.
Since I have many times gone to the camp for events and to visit, it was especially interesting learning stories and some histories behind things at camp.
Every single short chapter in this book is a treat, taking the reader back to a time and place that was friendly and simple. It is a very good read – and a good re-read!

In the Warmth of the Shadow Robert N Ruesch 9781640285347 Books Reviews
I only pushed 4 stars because I rarely indicate perfection! I have known Bob Ruesch for over 15 years and have heard many stories over lots of lunches. But to have them compiled together and especially about his many years at the Y in Estes is particularly entertaining. Having first moved to Estes Park in 1988 and spending many days at the Y, and some nights as well (both at the Estes Park center and at Snow Mountain Ranch in Winter Park), it made the reading that much more enjoyable. I had never met Walter but I did know Alice. What a great tribute Bob has given to his father and mother, to his dear wife, but most of all, to his loving Lord. You will be encouraged, challenged, and entertained.
I grew up in the shadow of the YMCA in Estes Park, Colorado. I enjoyed the individual stories about life at the YMCA in the 1950s-1960s. The humor about the drinking fountain, cutting watermelons for 2,000 at a "picnic", the dedication of the family to its employees and visitors. The interwoven lessons about faith all contribute to the glow emanating from this personal story. Delightful.
What a great book! The feeling of "warmth" came through the words as I recalled my own experience working at the YMCA of the Rockies. Bob craftily conveys the family atmosphere which pervades that camp/resort. His stories are so entertaining as he describes being educated by experiences with staff and guests. I especially enjoyed the story which led him (as a child) to ask, "What is this woman--the candy police of justice, truth, and the American way?" His affection for Mountainside Lodge is apparent as he describes the joys and challenges of working on that housekeeping crew. This is a must read for anyone connected with the YMCA of the Rockies in any way, and would also be enjoyed by anyone else. I knew Bob's wonderful parents and know he has honored them with this book, as well as in many other ways.
"We live within the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered by the God who is above all gods." Psalm 911.
This book will definitely introduce you to Robert Ruesch! You will feel like you really know him when you read this book. He had some incredible and adventurous experiences growing up at the YMCA camp in Estes Park, Colorado. One of the most beautiful locations in the world. The fun, the ministry, the tributes to Christ and his parents, it's all in there. You'll enjoy a look into the past, the history of the Y, and the people that were involved there from a boy's point of view. If you've ever gone on a vacation to a YMCA camp, you'll need to get a copy of this book. The Y's are special places. Read about the memories and the life beyond. God is in control!
I usually read fiction, so I wasn't certain this book would captivate my interest. I gave it a try primarily because I grew up in Estes Park, Colorado, and was curious about what Robert Ruesch had to say. He painted a detailed picture with his descriptions of time and place and people. He must have kept a journal or notes or has an incredible memory.
This non-fiction account of his life growing up at the YMCA Conference Center, in the Rocky Mountains, reads like a series of chronological short stories. Stories honoring God; describing serious, even sad events; Y Camp history; the beauty of the land; and a perfect sprinkling of humorous happenings. One chapter is titled The Midnight Guitar Sneak (one of my personal favorites), another, Let's Wash a Bus. I learned the church bell was named Duke. I loved this true account. You might too.
An amazing look into the life of a truly fortunate person who lived life many of us could only dream about! Those years at the camp formed Robert Ruesch into what he is today - even his weird sense of humor and puns were a result of the many diversified folks he met. A truly great read for any ages - a book you can pick up any time and continue the journey as he grows in the Lord.
