It's Christmas Eve.
Santa is sick.
A script for a family movie about how Santa is going to deliver the presents if he is feeling sick on the one night of the year he has to work. Could Mother Christmas save the day? She will have to deal with a charging bull, a savage chihuahua, the Three Wise (and angry) Men, American Air force fighters, police and singing aliens.
A Merry, but mad, Christmas.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review, and I'm so glad I did. What a fun read!

I enjoyed Simon Wheeler's "Santa's Night Off" from start to finish. Father Christmas and his wife have the "bickering old couple" thing down pat. There's lots of love there, but they have the type of conversations that are heard in just about everyone's grandparents' houses all over the world. This is not your typical beaming, rosy-cheeked North Pole couple as portrayed in so many movies.

Father Christmas falls ill, and although Mother Christmas thinks he's laying it on a bit thick, she ends up being goaded into delivering gifts in his place on Christmas Eve. A series of misadventures follows, with MC teaching space aliens how to sing "Jingle Bells," among other things.

While she's traipsing the globe, enjoying her fill of mince pies and sherry, fighting off crazed Chihuahuas, ripping the glued-on beards off snooty fake Santas, and mending family relationships, Father Christmas has a miraculous recovery. His time at home is spent singing punk rock Christmas songs with only the dog as his witness, and having his own hand-puppet show with the turkey he's teaching himself to cook.

Each one learns to appreciate what the other one's work entails, and both of them have a wonderful time of it when all is said and done.

Some parts might not be as appropriate for younger children because of a little bit of language, but for the most part, it had me laughing, even with juvenile humor thrown in. (Who doesn't like a whoopie cushion?) There are tender moments, too, and the variety of cultures it touches upon make it fun all the way around.

Santa Night Off edition by Simon Hugh Wheeler Children eBooks Reviews

Santa's Night Off is a wonderfully funny, sometimes poignant, romp of a holiday screenplay, which I would LOVE to see played out on the stage! It's not your usual Christmas story, but that is what makes it so much fun!

Santa, or Father Christmas, is portrayed in a way that you've never seen him portrayed before (I won't spoil it by giving away details regarding his character). When he's feeling under the weather on Christmas Eve, his wife, Mother Christmas takes it upon herself to take over his duties, and the night that ensues is quite a ride! As she makes the rounds delivering toys to all the deserving children of the world, she has a few unexpected mishaps and encounters with a colorful cast of characters.

I loved that Father and Mother Christmas have a dynamic that is so normal of a long-married couple, so realistic and comfortable (read not always perfect or without ups and downs ;). They made me laugh out loud, as did many of the other characters, including the aliens and the Old Spanish Farmer.

This is not a story that is heavy on the meaning of Christmas like so many Christmas stories are. However, that theme is sprinkled throughout in a refreshing, uplifting, decidedly modern way. Mr. Wheeler beautifully balances a sharp wit and humor with the underlying message of the merits of being good for the sake of being good. I really enjoyed this, and will definitely be checking out some of his other works!

What would happen if Santa became ill on Christmas Eve? Who would deliver the presents to all the good boys and girls? Surely there is someone that can help out? But who?!

Mother Christmas takes over for her ill husband and what happens next is a riot! There are several mishaps that throw her off. Obstacles that get in her way but don't stop her. Oh, No! She is bound and determined to show Santa that she can do this. That it's not as hard as he makes it out to be.

You can tell that Mother and Father Christmas have been together a long time, by the way they speak to each other. It's like listening to my grandparents talk. Rather endearing in it's own way. But still cheeky!

I could see this turned into a play or even a TV show. It was a cute read. Adults will definitely love this book, as we can all relate to the holiday mishaps.
Santa’s Night Off is a screenplay where Father Christmas has supposedly taken ill and leaves Mother Christmas to takeover his year-end grand finale of delivering presents. (Mostly he just wants to play hooky.) As an actress, I’ve read many screenplays. If the idea of reading a script puts you off, rest assured that this is more like a script with extended direction, thus making the action visible to the reader. In doing this, those who are not used to this form of reading will not be alienated.

There is a lot of humor in here. I usually don’t chuckle while reading, but I found myself doing so many times. (At times I found as if I was watching old Saturday Night Live sketches.) The characters were fun and managed to be unique while also possessing the qualities you would expect from Father and Mother Christmas.

American readers should note we are dealing with Mother and Father Christmas, not Mr. & Mrs. Claus. As a result, some of the grammar may sound a little odd.

I enjoyed reading this story, smiled a lot, and even had my heart touched in a few places. It’s an enjoyable read.
